Canada’s Research In Motion (RIM) has confirmed it will begin assembling its popular line of BlackBerry smartphones in Argentina later this year. Working in conjunction with Argentina’s Brightstar, RIM will begin production in Tierra del Fuego on October 1 and the first devices will ship later that same month.
RIM’s arrival means practically all of the world’s major cell phone operators will have production facilities in Argentina. Samsung, Nokia, LG, Motorola, Sony Ericsson, Alcatel and ZTE are already assembling devices in Argentina and, like RIM, most of the gigantes celulares have chosen to work with Argentine partners. Among the largest producers, Motorola has been assembling cell phones in Tierra del Fuego since 2000 and Nokia ramped up production of the N8 last year.
Over 5 million cell phones were manufactured in Tierra del Fuego in 2010 and government forecasts suggest 8 million will be assembled and shipped this year. Between 2009 and 2010, sales of two of the most popular smartphones, the iPhone and BlackBerry, grew 275% and 205%, respectively in Argentina.
RIM’s announcement comes on the heels of Hewlett-Packard’s recent decision to manufacture laptops in Tierra del Fuego. With production commencing in November, HP plans to assemble and ship 214,000 laptops in 2012 and 341,000 in 2013. (Full article in Spanish)
