Abierto de Tortugas 2011

Tortugas, the first jewel of the Triple Corona, is contested now through October 15.

Spring has sprung in Buenos Aires and with it polo season is in full swing. The weather was perfect yesterday for the first match of the Tortugas Open, a six-team tournament and the first jewel of the Triple Corona.

This year promises the same caliber of high-goal polo from the world’s greatest players with the added intrigue of some lineup changes and new luxury brand corporate sponsors.

Last year’s Triple Crown champion, Ellerstina, and Palermo Open runner-up, La Dolfina, will both compete in Tortugas beginning this weekend. Both teams bring new-look formations for 2011. Pablo Mac Donough (10) and Juan Martin Nero (10) have left Ellerstina to join forces with Adolfo Cambiaso (10) and David Stirling (9) at La Dolfina. Mac Donough and Nero replace Lucas Monteverde (9) and Bartolome Castagnola (9) who now form half of the new Estancia Grande team with Agustin (9) and Sebastian Merlos (9).

Estancia Grande will face Indios Chapaleufu II this afternoon for the second day of Tortugas. The winner automatically advances to face Ellerstina in the October 9 Semifinal, while the loser faces Ellerstina this weekend. The four Novillo Astrada brothers of La Aguada dominated Pilara yesterday in the opening match 12-8 and will now face La Dolfina in the October 8 Semifinal. The Tortugas Final will be contested on October 15 at 15:30.
