Their cross-town rivals may be nicknamed “the millionaires,” but it was fans of Boca Juniors scratching the seven-figure checks this week for premium seats at La Bombonera.
The Buenos Aires club recently added 8 pitch-level VIP suites in the coveted space between the team benches, and yesterday’s on-field auction had them going to the highest bidder. Each 170 square foot box has seating for 14, floor-to-ceiling glass, flat-screen TVs, a kitchenette, catering service, WiFi and private security.
Auction participants were bidding on the chance to reserve the suites for all Boca matches through the end of December 2013. At a minimum, that would be 28 First Division and international matches over the next fifteen months.
The most coveted piece of real estate was the 16 square meter suite next to the Boca bench which sold for $1,004,300 pesos (US$213,000). Second place went to the box next to the visitors’ bench which fetched $871,200 pesos (US$185,000). The remaining six suites sold for between US$102,000 and US$167,000.
Spread out over 28 matches, the cost per match for a seat in the most expensive box comes out to $2,500 pesos (US$530), while seats in the most affordable box cost $1,234 pesos (US$260). (Full Story in Spanish)
