The number of tourists coming to Uruguay has doubled over the past decade, while the number of Uruguay hotel reservations has tripled, according to new information from the Ministry of Tourism and Sports.

Between January and September, Tourists Spent US$570 Million In Uruguay Hotels, is the headline of Luis Custodio’s detailed analysis of the rapid evolution of Uruguay’s hotel sector over the past ten years. The boom in four and five-star properties, the spread of quality hotels to the country’s interior and the lengthy star certification process are just some of the topics he addresses.

The number of tourists visiting Uruguay rose from 1.5 million in 2003 to 3.0 million in 2011 and 2.9 million in 2012 meaning the country today receives as many tourists as residents. Over the same ten-year period, the number of visitors staying in Uruguay hotels rose from 400,000 in 2003 to 1.1 million last year.

In the first nine months of this year, Uruguay visitors spent US$1.4 billion on accommodations ranging from condominiums and campgrounds to hostels and hotels. Of that total, US$570 million was spent in Uruguay hotels. Not surprisingly, the top three destinations for Uruguay tourists were Montevideo, Punta del Este and Colonia. (Full Story in Spanish)
