Buquebus Francisco

The US$150 million Buquebus is the world’s first dual fuel high-speed catamaran.

The new LNG-powered Buquebus Francisco, has only been in service for a few months, but it already has a trophy to display in its massive Duty Free Shop alongside the Tannat and Toblerones.

The new US$150 million Catamaran just received the Black Diamond Award at the 2014 World LNG Fuels Conference in Houston, the industry’s premier event promoting natural gas use for heavy duty transportation.

According to World LNG Fuels, “Francisco was chosen by five industry judges on four criteria: (1) technology innovation, (2) market impact, (3) project execution and (4) risk overcome.

Other finalists included UPS’ LNG-fueled truck fleet rollout, CN Railway’s LNG-fueled locomotives, Omya’s LNG-fueled Vermont mine and Noble Energy’s Keota, Colo. oilfield project.”

In addition to setting a world speed record of 58.1 knots (67 miles per hour), Francisco can transport 1,000 passengers and 150 cars from Buenos Aires to Montevideo in 132 minutes. (Full Story)
