Luxury travel and tourism is booming here in Argentina, Uruguay and other corners of Latin America, and this week’s 2011 International Tourism Fair showcased some of the region’s most beautiful destinations. Over 1,700 exhibitors and tens of thousands of visitors were on hand for the four-day turismopalooza held at La Rural in Buenos Aires.

As always, Argentina’s travel wares were on full display in the main pavilion. After decades of squandered opportunities, the host nation is finally realizing its full potential as a tourism magnet now reflected in the record number of inbound touristsinternational flights and cruise ships coming to Argentina. Now the#1 preferred travel destination for neighboring Brazilians, Argentina used FIT to showcase the natural beauty of the interior. Salta, Mendoza and Bariloche had three of the most impressive booths at FIT 2011.

Brazil, the number one travel destination for Argentines traveling abroad, also had enough exhibitors to fill an entire pavilion with green-and-yellow-Embratur eye candy. Brazil’s tourism agency capitalized on the FIT media frenzy to announce the 12 host cities for the 2014 World Cup. According to Brasilturis Jornal, Brazilian exhibitors were seeking to lure foreign visitors to Brazil with more than just Sol e Praia (Sun and Beach).

Perennial InvestBA favorite Uruguaya case study in tourism growth, represented “the 598″ in full force at FIT 2011 with beautiful panoramic vistas of Maldonado, Rocha and Colonia. APROTUR presented Destination Piriapolis to showcase one of the country’s most affordable waterfront destinations. Featured this month in International Living, Piriapolis is beginning to attract more foreign investors seeking an unspoiled destination along the Tango Coast.

Tourism is big business these days here in the Southern Cone, and all eyes are on BA for this weekend’s 2011 Latin America International Tourism Fair (FIT). The annual event attracts over 1,700 exhibitors including travel agents, hotel chains and tour operators from 45 countries in Latin America and beyond. The Expo is divided into four key areas to balance the exhibitors geographically: Argentina, Brazil/Uruguay, Latin America/Caribbean and International.

As always, Argentina’s travel wares will be on full display in the main pavilion. After decades of squandered opportunities, the host nation is finally realizing its full potential as a tourism magnet now reflected in the record number of inbound tourists, international flights and cruise ships coming to Argentina. Now the #1 preferred travel destination for neighboring Brazilians, Argentina will use FIT to showcase the natural beauty of destinations like Bariloche, Cordoba, Mendoza and Salta.

Brazil, the number one travel destination for Argentines traveling abroad, will occupy an entire pavilion filled with Embratur eye candy. Brazil’s tourism agency will capitalize on the media frenzy FIT generates to announce the 12 host cities for the 2014 World Cup. According to Brasilturis Jornal, this year Brazilian exhibitors are seeking to lure foreign visitors to Brazil with more than just Sol e Praia (Sun and Beach).

Perennial InvestBA favorite Uruguay, a case study in tourism growth, will also represent “the 598″ in force at FIT 2011. APROTUR will present Destination Piriapolis to showcase one of the country’s most attractive and affordable waterfront destinations. Featured this month in International Living, Piriapolis is beginning to attract more foreign investors seeking an unspoiled destination along the Tango Coast.

Brazil Is Still #1 Destination for Argentines

Argentines on the beaches of Florianopolis

Argentine tourists pose for a picture on the beach of Florianópolis, one of Brazil's seaside gems.

We learned last week that Buenos Aires is the #1 destination of choice for Brazilian tourists (even over Orlando and New York), and it appears that Argentine tourists are still reciprocating. New figures released this morning by Brazil’s Ministry of Tourism show that our northern neighbor welcomed 5.16 million foreign visitors last year, an 8% increase over the 4.8 million that arrived for business or pleasure in 2009.

Among those visitors, Argentina ranked #1 with 1.4 million citizens traveling to Brazil last year, a 16% increase over the 1.2 million in 2009. Greater regional ties and business deals are also evident in the growing number of Uruguayans and Chileans traveling to Brazil. Those two countries ranked #6 and #11 in 2009, but today they rank #4 and #6, respectively. After Argentina, the U.S. accounted for the most travelers to Brazil with 641,000, an 8% increase over the 604,000 in 2009.

Jornal do Comercio says Embratur is forecasting a 6-7% increase in foreign visitors this year, as more Brazilian airlines are adding flights to Rio and Sao Paulo from cities in Europe, the U.S. and Latin America. The country has also announced a plan to train 200,000 students for tourism professions, as the interest and hype surrounding the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics builds.

It sounds like what Brazil really needs are 200,000 more construction workers. According to the BBC, 10 of Brazil’s 13 airports will not be ready for the World Cup, and it was just announced the 82,000-seat Maracana needs a new roof. (Full Story in Portuguese)

Brasil Ahora Tourism Promotion seeks to attract more visitors from Argentina and the U.S.

Argentina sent 1.2 million tourists to Brazil in 2009, while the United States sent over 600,000.

At the height of the summer travel season, we posed the question, Where do Brazilians go when they need a little D&R (Descanso e Relaxmento)? Judging by the Portuguese-speaking throngs on the slopes of Bariloche or in the trendiest parrillas in Puerto Madero, we surmised, Argentina was a safe bet.

Now the flip-side of that tourism coin: A record number of Argentines visited Brazil last year, and a major public/private sector marketing campaign is priming the tourism pump for more in 2010.

Over 1.2 million Argentines visited Brazil in 2009, a 19% increase over 2008, in a year when total visitors to Brazil actually declined slightly by 5%. Argentines account for 1 out of every 4 visitors to the Mercosur neighbor followed by the United States which sent over 600,000 travelers to Brazil, roughly 12% of the 4.8 million total visitors.

In an exclamatory effort to keep a good thing going, the Brazilian Ministry of Tourism, Embratur, recently launched an aggressive marketing campaign called ¡Brasil Ahora! (Brazil Now!). Full-page advertisements in Clarin and La Nacion promote discounted vacation packages to beautiful Brazilian destinations like Florianopolis, Salvador, Buzios and Pipa.

Fortunately for Argentines, there is no shortage of flights from Ezeiza and Aeroparque. Major airlines like GOL, TAM and Aerolineas Argentinas are participating in the ¡Brasil Ahora! promotion, while short-haul carriers like Pluna and Buquebus offer attractive airfare options. Embratur says the goal of the campaign is to introduce foreign travelers to new Brazilian destinations in the years leading up to the 2014 World Cup.

According to the government report, of the 1.2 million Argentine visitors, 77% entered Brazil for pleasure, the average stay was 11 days, and Florianopolis was the #1 destination.
