LaurasiaBefore opening her boutique in the Jardín Botánico section of Palermo, Alejandra Llense scoured the shops of the trendy barrio to see what they were offering.   Then she decided to go in a completely different direction.  And Laurasia, which would seem at home in the West Village or Notting Hill, was born.  The small shop offers clothing from only two designers, Flavia Martini and Marcela Pagella, one textile artist, Ines Anderfuhren, and leather goods from Cuoio.   The result is a well-edited collection that is not only unique, but completely wearable.  Llense’s goal was to offer pieces that are chic and fashionable as well as extremely versatile; one can wear the pieces from Laurasia to work in the morning and then, with a change of accessories, out for dinner or drinks. When she first opened, Llense says the boutique attracted mainly an older clientele.  However, as young, urban BA professionals begin to discover the high quality and versatility of Laurasia’s pieces, the average age of her audience is slowly declining. Simultaneously, Laurasia is becoming a destination for chic young porteñas as well as their stylish BA mothers.

Laurasia is located at Cabello 3928. (Google Map)

Tramando Nights

This week's Tramando Nights showcased BA designer Martin Churba's designs for the masses.

On July 12 and 13, renowned Argentine designer Martin Churba hosted Tramando Nights, a sample sale of sorts sponsored by L’Oreal and Chandon, in his gorgeous Recoleta showroom.  Guests sipped champagne, received complimentary makeovers, and tried on deeply discounted pieces from past Tramando collections. Churba, who considers himself a textile designer above all, creates pieces that are completely unique yet manage to retain an undeniably edgy elegance. More than simple garments, his designs are true avant garde works of art. The quality workmanship of each piece is evident in the intricately woven rubber material that the designer utilizes in the creation of his collections. The result is structured clothing that is eye-catching but still flattering, highlighting the wearer’s best features and making her truly stand out in a crowd. Which is what every woman wants, isn’t it?

Tramando, located at Rodriguez Peña 1973, celebrate’s its 7th anniversary this August. Look for more on the designer in our September issue of InvestBA Privada and be sure to follow VanityBA on Twitter.

Fashionistas Find Paradise in Argentina

Lucire Cardon

BA-based Cardon is one of Argentina's fashion retailers recommended by Lucire for their quality.

Buenos Aires has long been synonymous with fashion, so it seems only natural that Lucire, the global fashion magazine, would pay a visit to Argentina. With Town & Country, editor Elyse Glickman gives Lucire readers a sweeping travelogue of two of the country’s most fashionable destinations: Buenos Aires (Town) and Mendoza (Country). From Recoleta’s boutiques to Palermo Soho to high-end malls like Patio Bullrich and Gallerías Pacífico, Glickman is impressed by the low cost/high quality of the clothes and shoes she encounters. She describes Cardon garments as possessing “workmanship that would make Ralph Lauren green with envy,” and declares the local shoe stores “particularly fabulous, not only for the quality-to-price ratio but also the shopping environments, which are part-tea salon, part-walk-in closet and part-couture boutique.” When it comes to fashion, Mendoza doesn’t play second bandoleón to Buenos Aires, although Glickman confesses to being taken by surprise. “What makes Mendoza—state and city—so memorable is that its charm and sophistication sneak up on you.”  She comes away impressed with the “seemingly endless offering of (more) leather goods, sweet shops doling out divine ice cream and sorbet, unprepossessing clothing stores and craft boutiques that are refreshingly un-kitschy.” Mendoza, she later discovers, also offers professional shoppers a picturesque place to unwind and raise a malbec toast after a stressful day of credit card swiping. In the post-shop analysis, she says, Argentina leaves you “with a sense of pride and the memory of sensory pleasure.” At least until the AMEX statement arrives. (Full Story)

The Bicentennial celebration is only days away, but there is still one major Buenos Aires event between now and 25 de mayoPuroDiseño! With over 3,000 exhibitors and 700,000 attendees, the annual design Expo at the Rural in Palermo always delivers an eclectic mix of design, innovation, fashion and accessories. The 2010 edition will offer four unique spaces for specialized design: Puro Inedito (Limited Edition designs made especially for the Expo), Puro Verde (a space dedicated to sustainable design), La Selección (a showcase of young designers selected for the Expo), and Paseo de las Artes (works of art from some of Argentina’s most celebrated designers. The Casa Sustentable (Sustainable House) from 2009’s fair takes on new dimensions with this year’s Mundo Sustentable (Sustainable World) built entirely of bamboo and hosted by architect Mónica Cohen. The space will also showcase the first ecological hotel to be built soon in San Telmo. And for those feeling up to the design challenge, there is Work In Patchwork, the first PuroDiseño contest where entrants will design objects using patchwork techniques that blend disciplines, techniques and new materials. Judges at this year’s event include Benito Fernandez and Maria Zunino among others. (Official Website)
