Mejores Empleadores en la Argentina

USA, USA, and UK/Netherlands took the top spots in the annual Best Employers ranking.

If there were an Olympics for the best employers in Argentina, the countries standing on the podium at the medal ceremony would be USA, USA and UK/Netherlands. Only instead of 1st, 2nd and 3rd place, all three would be taking home the gold according to the annual ranking by Argentina business magazine Apertura.

In the 2011 Best Employers in Argentina ranking, Apertura focuses on five key areas of HR practices in Argentine companies: professional careers, compensation, work environment, work hours and employee training. Foreign companies dominate the rankings with names like American Express, Ford, Dow, PepsiCo, Toyota, P&G, DuPont, Dell and Cisco Systems all in the upper echelons of each category: 1,000+ Employees, 200-1,000 Employees and Under 200 Employees.

In the final analysis, after all of the yoga classes, free lunches, stock options, deep-tissue massages and flex time were taken into account, three winners emerged: Google (Under 200 Employees), Coca-Cola (200-1,000 Employees) and Unilever (1,000+ Employees). Both Coca-Cola and Unilever retained their #1 ranking from the 2010 survey while Google knocked off Microsoft in the Under 200 category.

Cronista’s Pablo Ortega says some unique characteristics of the Big 3 include a work environment where employees can reinvent themselves (Google), flexible schedules, vacation “soft landings” and the ability to work at home (Coca-Cola) and a work environment where 95% of active employees would recommend a friend work in the same company (Unilever). Exposicion Rural de Palermo

Campo Bravo: Hard work and national pride on display at the La Rural Expo in Palermo.

Today marks the first day of the 125th La Rural Expo in Palermo, the most important cattle and farming expo in Argentina. For the next two weeks, the “campo argentino” takes center stage and everyone from truck makers to politicians want to shake hands and cozy up to some of the most influential people in the AAA, the Argentine Agricultural Arena.

In there’s one thing a farmer likes, it’s a dependable truck, so it only seems fitting Ford would be front and center as Official Sponsor of this year’s Expo. Over 3,000-square feet of space will showcase the new generation of Ranger pick-up trucks, a new Mondeo with a a two-liter Ecoboost motor, and an off-road Test Course where drivers can practice “advanced maneuvers.”

Current and aspiring politicians will also be practicing advanced maneuvers of persuasion, according to Diario Norte’s Jose Valentin Derewicki. The agricultural expert says both ruling and opposition parties will be working the countryside crowd assembled in Palermo in hopes of swaying an important voting bloc in this year’s presidential election.

Perhaps the only group outnumbering the pick-ups and politicians will be the different breeds and species of animals on display at La Rural over the coming fortnight: 4,380 to be exact. (Official Website)

Last year InvestBA wrote that BA had become A Runner’s Paradise. This year the sport has exploded with bigger races, better courses, more sponsors and, most importantly, runners. A lot more. Clarin says the “Boom de Carreras” is drawing 20% more participants than last year while female participation has grown 50% over the past decade. The sport’s beauty is its simplicity.

“You don’t need fancy gear or expertise or money,” writes Clarin’s Jimena Olazar, “so there are no excuses for not joining this new phenomenon.” Seasoned runners and would-be corredores in Buenos Aires also have a great support network from the local Club de Corredores to Runnin’ Magazine with 5,000 Facebook friends to the City of Buenos Aires herself which offers Buenos Aires Corre, free running education and training in five locations throughout Capital Federal.

Running teams, both informal and corporate-sponsored, are also growing at a phenomenal rate: 600% since 2001. And the payoff for all that training? Huge weekend races that feel more like a fiesta than a carrera. Part road race, part rock concert, part love parade with thousands donning the requisite race shirt, Buenos Aires road races are spectacular.

Nike’s annual 10K is probably the best example, and this year’s We Run Buenos Aires did not disappoint. Following a panoramic packet pick-up on the 20th floor of Madero Harbour last Friday, the streets were bathed in a sea of swooshes on Saturday, and Nike further solidified its reputation as the brand most synonymous with running in Argentina. With Nike Running Teams now stretching from Buenos Aires to Rosario to Cordoba to Mendoza, Argentina’s passion for running knows no bounds. Hence the tagline, Corre Sin Limites.

Ford staged plays in Argentina to rollout the new Ranger

Ranger Y Yo: Ford & JWT tapped local legends and creative talent in launching the new Ranger in BA.

Borges…Cortázar…Ranger? Lovers of Latin American literature know Argentina has a rich tradition of magic realism. The literary style which draws heavily upon fables and myths to highlight the magical in contemporary society exploded in the 1960′s and continues to inspire young writers today…often in places where you least expect it.

Take for example this story from AdAge of Ford’s new truck roll-out in Argentina. Yes, everyone agreed, the 2010 Ranger is a fine truck, but the new model didn’t really have head-turning upgrades over last year’s model. So Ford turned to its agency, JWT, who in turn created a campaign that solicited countryside fables from citizens in BA, narrowed the entries down from 1,000 to 3 and selected tree different playwrights to create original, 25-minute plays.

Expensive? Yes. Time-consuming? Yes. A brilliant way to connect with your customers, broaden your base of potential buyers and bring cultural stimulation to the masses.? Yes, yes and yes. The traveling production, which played four different cities in BA province and drew large crowds hand-picked by local dealers, has been so popular that, according to Marketing Director Ricardo Flaminni “local mayors have contacted Ford and asked if the dramas can come to their towns, too.”

So how does the play end? The bottom line focus for Ford is ultimately regaining market share in Argentina’s competitive truck space, but the value of what they and JWT created and gave back to the masses can never be captured in a PowerPoint. Bravo!

Argentina's ADEFA releases auto production numbers

Argentina auto production jumped 170% in February compared to Feb'09. (Source: ADEFA)

Another positive sign of economic recovery for both Argentina and several export destination countries based on data released yesterday by the Argentina Association of Auto Manufacturers (ADEFA).

The Association is reporting a 170% increase in auto production for February 2010 compared to the previous year, or approximately 40,000 units compared to 14,900 units in February 2009. Last month’s robust auto production figures also represent a 27% increase over January 2010, according to Clarín.

Argentina’s auto exports boasted similar triple-digit gains with a 171% increase in February 2010 vs. February 2009. February exports to Brazil—historically the largest importer of vehicles manufactured in Argentina (87% per ADEFA)—jumped 185% compared to last February.

The top three countries or regions posting the largest year-over-year increases in autos imported from Argentina were Asia (473%), Europe (838%), and South Africa (which must currently be importing enough new cars to accommodate every player, journalist and foreign visitor for the upcoming World Cup…19,200%).

While exports are obviously booming, domestic auto sales at Argentina dealerships this February grew a more moderate 49% compared to last February. In terms of total production, the Top 5 manufacturers are GM Argentina, Ford Argentina, Fiat Argentina, Peugeot-Citroen and Renault Argentina. (Production by Make Pie Chart).
