At long last, the final jewel of the Triple Crown is being contested in Palermo. Facundo Pieres and Ellerstina Etiqueta Negra already plucked the first two jewels at Tortugas and Hurlingham, so a victory in the 117th Polo Championship would complete the crown. Standing in their way in Group B are the Astradas of La Aguada BMW, who lost a heartbreaker to Adolfo Cambiaso and La Dolfina Peugeot in the Semis at Hurlingham. La Dolfina then went on to lose the final to Ellerstina, a match in which Cambiaso did not score, so Team Peugeot is looking to rebound at Palermo.

La Dolfina notched an impressive 18-12 victory over Sao Jose Audi in the first round at Palermo, and they face off against Chapa Uno Hope Funds this afternoon at 16:30. The early match at 14:00 pits Pilara Piaget against Sao Jose. Group B action on Sunday will feature La Aguada BMW and Alegria Air France in the first match and Ellerstina v. Chapa II in the second.

The world’s oldest polo tournament is celebrating its 117th edition, and the stage is set for an incredible final tomorrow at the Hurlingham Open. The second jewel in the Triple Crown will feature the Pieres brothers of Ellerstina taking on Adolfo Cambiaso and La Dolfina. And if last weekend’s semifinal matches were any indication, tomorrow’s final should be a polo supercla¡sico.

Hot off their victory at Tortugas, the first jewel of the Triple Crown, Ellerstina Etiqueta Negra defeated Chapa Uno 20-16 to win Group A, but they played poorly and Facundo Pieres even described the effort as “bad, absent-minded” polo.  The same could be said of La Dolfina in the Group B semifinal when they fell behind 11-5 through six chukkers on the strength of La Aguada BMW’s inspired play and Javier Novillo Astrada’s six goals. But then La Dolfina went on a tear through the final two and notched the equalizer with only seconds to go in the final chukker. Only 35 seconds into the extra chukker, Caset fed Cambiaso who scored the final goal which lifted La Dolfina to a 13-12 victory. (ESPN Video)

Update: Ellerstina won the final match 19-13 and emerged with the second jewel of the Triple Corona. Next stop Palermo for the Abierto which gets underway November 21. For more information about Buenos Aires events and the Argentina polo lifestyle, download the latest issue of InvestBA Privada.

1893 was a difficult year for Argentina. An economic crisis under President Luis Saenz Pena was hurting consumers and businesses throughout the country including the newly-established Hurlingham Club which was teetering on the verge of bankruptcy. Despite the crisis, the Club members moved forward with plans for their first annual polo tournament in October 1893. That event, which saved the Club from bankruptcy, is today the oldest polo championship in the world and the second most important in Argentina, the Abierto de Hurlingham.

This year’s Hurlingham Open begins today and features some of the world’s best polo players and teams competing through the final on November 6. In today’s first round matches, Facundo Pieres and Ellerstina face Sao Jose while Pilara squares off against Chapa Uno. Tomorrow’s action begins with Adolfo Cambiaso and La Dolfina taking on La Alegria followed by La Aguada going head-to-head with Indios Chapaleufu II.

Second round matches take place next weekend, the Semis will be contested on October 30/31 and the Final will be played November 6, so print out your bracket and get out to Hurlingham for the 117th Abierto. Hurlingham Polo

The world's best polo players face off at Hurlingham from October 19 to November 6.

On Tuesday October 19, polo season kicks into high gear in Argentina with the 117th annual Hurlingham Polo Open at Buenos Aires’ prestigious Hurlingham Club.

Considered the oldest and second most important polo event in the world, after next month’s Argentine Open, the Hurlingham Polo Open promises to live up to its reputation. Since its founding in 1888, Hurlingham has attracted many of the sport’s premiere players and the 2010 Polo Open will continue the tradition.

This year’s line-up pits Ellerstina (whose players are ranked #2, 3, 4, and 5 in the world according to WorldPoloTour.com), Pilara, Chapa Uno and Sao Jose against each other in Group A, while Group B includes La Dolfina (led by the world’s top player, Adolfo Cambiaso), La Aguada, Indios Chapaleufu II, and La Alegria. The event runs through November 6, where the winner of Group A will battle the winner of Group B for the title on Field 1 at 4:30.

In yesterday’s post, we learned why one global investor believes Argentina offers some of the best real estate values in South America. Today, the Financial Times’ Oliver Balch explains why the mega-rich, ”especially those with a passion for polo,” are riding out the recession in Argentina. (Full article)

InvestBA readers know October to December is polo prime time in Argentina, but Balch explains that interest remains strong year-round given Argentina’s plentiful and inexpensive prairies…the world-class quality of its bloodlines…(and) its crop of exceptional players (Of the 12 best-ranked players in the world, 11 are Argentine). Cutting-edge breeding and affordable embryonic transfer facilities are also cited as competitive advantages for Argentina’s polo industry.

“Death and bankruptcy are the only reasons to quit polo,” says Balch, “As long as the country’s mega-rich patrons remain healthy and wealthy, its polo industry should as well.” And thanks to Argentina’s relative affordability, it’s not just the mega-rich who can enjoy the polo lifestyle. Polo tourism has grown exponentially in Buenos Aires province thanks to the number of estancias offering polo clinics like La Aguada, El Venado and La Araucaria. So, as long as you’re going to ride out the recession, why not create your own polo uniform and ride it out in style?
