In the end, Argentines Sebastian Ariel Jimenez and Maria Ines Bogado took home the top prize in Salon Tango.
In Buenos Aires, tango has its roots among the waves of immigrants arriving in the mid-1800s, so it comes as no surprise that the Tango Festival y Mundial de Baile (Tango World Championships) have been held in the city for the past twelve years.
The event, which took place at venues around Buenos Aires between the 13th and 31st of August included lessons, conferences, workshops, and film screenings, in addition to the actual competition. Tens of thousands of people attended the festival, learning about the history of tango, attending seminars, and trying the dance out for themselves.
For the competition, hundreds of couples from around the world converged on Buenos Aires in hopes of being crowned World’s Best in Salon Tango or Stage Tango. In the end, Argentine couple Sebastian Ariel Jimenez and Maria Ines Bogado took home the top prize in Salon Tango, while the Japanese-Argentinean pair of Diego Ortega and Chizuko Kuwamoto were named champions in Stage Tango in front of a sold out crowd at the legendary Luna Park.
