The Southernmost Shopping Center In The World

Paseo del Fuego Shopping Ushuaia Tierra del Fuego

Given the cold climate and limited sunlight, the new galleria should become a magnet for Ushuaia activity.

Ushuaia, the capital of Tierra del Fuego, has long attracted foreign tourists and adventure seekers with its unique combination of natural beauty and national parks. Now shopaholics will have something to celebrate in the world’s southernmost city when the doors open at the Paseo del Fuego in October.

Located along the Beagle Channel, the US$32 million galleria will feature 70 stores spread over 200,000 square feet including a 4-screen cinema, a Food Court, a sport club, a big box electronics store and an existing supermarket. The developers, a joint venture between Eidico and Retco, were lured to Tierra del Fuego in part by the Industrial Promotion Law which has drawn manufacturers of appliances and high-tech gadgets like cell phones to Argentina’s southernmost province in recent years.

With over 150,000 residents and 300,000 visitors annually, the demographics and total lack of competitors made sense for the team behind the Paseo del Fuego. And given the region’s cold temperatures and limited sunlight year-round, they envision the large, multi-level indoor space becoming a magnet for entertainment and recreational activities in Ushuaia.

According to Shelknam Sur, the developers met with local media and Tierra del Fuego government officials this morning for a guided tour of the galleria. Construction is now in the final phase, and the Grand Opening is scheduled for October.
