“Bigger & Business-Minded” Define New Wave Of Palermo Hotels

The latest wave of hotels being built in the popular Buenos Aires neighorhood of Palermo are much larger than their predecessors and increasingly focused on the needs of business travellers.

Changes In The Palermo Hotel Profile is the headline of Isabel Stratta’s analysis in iEco of the morphing lodging landscape in areas like Palermo Nuevo, Palermo Soho and Palermo Hollywood where the word “hotel” used to conjure up images of boutique properties and renovated historic buildings with no more than a dozen rooms.

“That profile is changing rapidly with the arrival of hotels with 60, 70 or more rooms which are looking to regain some profitability by catering to business travellers,” says Stratta. It’s a smart move in anticipation of more expo tourism when the new Buenos Aires Convention Center opens next year.

The author points to the new 80-room Casasur Bellini opening this month between the Botanical Gardens and the Rural Expo Center, another 60-room hotel rising in the Buenos Aires Audiovisual District, the 63-room Own Grand Palermo Soho, the 120-room Dazzler Palermo Hotel which opened in January, the 50-room Bulnes Eco Suites and the expanding, soon-to-be 54-room Vitrum Hotel.

The Palermo hotel business model changed. First were the prices, when the 2008 financial crisis said goodbye to rates of US$300 per night. Now the daily average is US$150. What we are seeing now is a new wave of changes related with expanding, offering more services and having a more sustainable scale,” says BA hotel sector analyst Luciana Salaun.

Estefania Arougetti, the GM of the Casasur Bellini, says she welcomes the arrival of more hotels in Palermo: “We like the company. The neighborhood is more attractive when there are more hotels, more lights, more security.” (Full Story in Spanish)
