The most high-profile hotel and casino complex in Punta del Este is about to double-down on that profile…actually quadruple-down when you count the number of new hotel rooms.

This week Chile’s Enjoy investment group announced plans to build three additional towers around the existing Y-shaped tower which first opened to the public in 1997 with a total of 294 guest rooms and 41 suites.

The first phase of construction will begin in 2016 and ultimately triple the hotel’s current capacity with the completion of twin, 22-story towers flanking the existing tower. The two new towers will add approximately 667,000 square feet (62,000 m2) and 600 guest rooms to the current Conrad Punta del Este guest capacity.

The second phase of construction will add a fourth tower to the rear of the complex overlooking Artigas Boulevard. The completion of that tower will quadruple the hotel’s capacity from its current level. (Note: There is still no confirmation if the Conrad Angels current roster will be quadrupled to sixteen.)

In addition, Enjoy plans to add over 7,200 square feet to the casino area, over 12,000 square feet of new bars and restaurants, over 16,000 square feet of shops and almost 14,000 square feet for a new spa which will have its own floor within the expanded complex.

In an interview with El Observador, Enjoy Cornad’s general manager Juan Eduardo Garcia explained the significance of the announcement: “When Enjoy assumed management of the hotel just over two years ago, we said our objective was to invest and work to strengthen the profile of Punta del Este as a world-class tourism destination. This project is in line with that goal and shows we deliver on our promises.”

The aggressive expansion project reflects long-term optimism regarding the currently-reeling Brazilian economy and the future influx of more and more Brazilians to the Uruguay resort town. Just last month, the company announced a 2 for 1 package for Brazilians through the end of the year, while LATAM is now offering direct flights from São Paulo to Punta del Este. (Full Story in Spanish)
