Montevideo Airport Arrivals Reach Record 1.7 Million Passengers

Montevideo airport arrivals should top 2 million with the addition of Qatar and Turkish Airlines.

Uruguay’s principal airport, Carrasco International, is on pace to tie the annual record for inbound passenger arrivals, according to data released yesterday at the First Annual International Air Transportation Forum (Foro del Aire) in Montevideo.

Government officials estimate Carrasco (MVD) will receive 1.7 million passengers this year which ties the record set in 2011. This is an amazing rebound considering Uruguay’s flagship carrier, Pluna, seized operations and 350 weekly flights in the middle of last year.

Pluna’s departure has been compensated by more arrivals from profitable carriers like LAN and TAM flying into Montevideo at or near capacity, and the addition of new international service with Air Europa and Air France, according to Carrasco’s concessionaire, Puertas del Sur.

Arrivals at the recently named World’s Best Airport could top 2 million in 2014 with the return of a national carrier, Alas Uruguay, and more international flights. Both Qatar Airlines and Turkish Airlines are negotiating with the government to add direct service to Montevideo, writes El Pais’ Maximiliano Montautti. (Full Story in Spanish)
