Buenos Aires and Montevideo usually take top honors as the best cities in South America in Mercer’s annual Quality of Living Worldwide City Rankings, and 2014 was no different although Montevideo nudged BA for the top spot.
The Mercer Index which is designed to help multinational companies compensate employees fairly when placing them on international assignments takes into account a wide range of factors like political stability, crime rates and environmental pollution.
Montevideo rose to #77 on the worldwide list and #1 in South America, while Buenos Aires slipped to #81 worldwide and #2 in South America. Santiago de Chile (#93) rounds out the Top 3 in the region, while other capital cities ranked much lower including Lima (124), Bogota (135) and Caracas (176).
Overall, Mercer named Vienna the #1 city worldwide followed by Zurich, Auckland, Munich and Vancouver. Canadian cities nabbed the 4 top spots in North America with San Francisco coming in 5th. Similarly, Japan accounts for 4 of the best cities in Asia, although Singapore still ranks #1. (Full Story in Spanish)
