Summer season may still be two months away, but a full-scale battle for summer tourism dollars is already being waged between the Uruguay hotel sector and the Argentine government.
For every measure the former rolls out to entice Argentines to spend January and February vacations in Uruguay, the latter counters with more obstacles making it more difficult for Argentines do so.
The latest salvo in the cross-river rivalry is being fired by the Uruguay hotel sector which just banded together and published a list of minimum prices for Uruguay hotels as a reference point for Argentines seeking clarity and transparency regarding summer hotel rates.
The president of the Uruguay Association of Hotels and Restaurants (AHRU), Juan Martinez, says the price list is an attempt by Uruguay hoteliers to silence the rumors and speculation that Uruguay hotel prices will be out of reach for neighboring Argentines this year. According to AHRU, Uruguay hotels are very competitive vis-a-vis Argentine beach destinations where hotel rates are being jacked up 15-20% compared to last year.
“We compared our rates with Argentina’s Atlantic Coast, and we are well below the prices in Mar del Plata, Villa Gesell, Pinamar and Carilo,” Martinez tells El Observador adding, “In Brazil, we remain competitive with Rio Grande do Sul.” (Full Story in Spanish)
